HI! Welcome to “Check Yourself” an easy way to learn more about yourself and your drinking.

“Check Yourself” is a questionnaire made up of about 70 questions. At the end, you will receive a personalized report that tells you about yourself and your drinking, as well as how you compare to other University students your age. See how you stack up!

Before you get started, we need to let you know about a couple of important things:

First of all, you should know that “Check Yourself” is an initiative of the Office of the Dean of Students. Your answers to all of these questions will be used to help the university with their planning and programs for students. All of your information is anonymous and confidential, and none of the information that we collect will be linked to your student records. We will not ask you for your name or any identifying information.

There is also a research project attached to this. Here is some information about the research project:

UPTAKE OF AN INTERNET-BASED BRIEF ALCOHOL INTERVENTION FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The research project is called “Uptake of an Internet-Based Brief Alcohol Intervention for University Students”. We would like to use your answers on the “Check Yourself” tool to help us learn more about alcohol use at the University of Alberta. Dr. Cameron Wild of the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta is in charge of this project. He can be reached at 780-492-6752 or cam.wild@ualberta.ca. If you have any general questions or concerns about the project, you can contact Jody Wolfe, the project coordinator, at jody.wolfe@ualberta.ca or 780-492-6757.

What is involved?

All you have to do is take the “Check Yourself” tool and give us permission to use your answers for our research project! You should know that participation in the research project is totally voluntary and it’s up to you to decide whether or not to participate. Even if you decide not to participate in the research project, you can still use the “Check Yourself “tool! You can skip any questions that you wish and there will be no negative consequences if you choose to not take part or stop answering questions. Potential Risks and Benefits

Some people might feel uncomfortable answering questions about their alcohol use. If so, we will provide you with information and resources about where to go for help. This information will be available on the personalized feedback report at the end of the tool.

There may be no direct benefit to you for taking part in the research project.
